RFLP markers for sugar beet breeding: chromosomal linkage maps and location of major genes for rhizomania resistance, monogermy and hypocotyl colour

Abstract: SummaryAn RFLP linkage map for the nine chromosomes of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. ssp. vulgarisvar. altissima Doell) was constructed by using a segregating population from a cross between two plants which were heterozygous for several agronomically interesting characters. One hundred and eleven RFLP loci have been mapped to nine linkage groups using 92 genomic markers. The current RFLP map covers a total length of 540 cM. Evidence for the existence of a major gene for rhizomania resistance ( R r l ) is given… Show more

“…In sugar beet, two maps have been published to date (Barzen et al, 1992;Pillen et al, 1992). The construction of RFLP maps has primarily been motivated by their usefulness in the support of breeding programmes, and as a prerequisite for gene isolation and physical mapping.…”

“…Some aspects of the use of RFLP in plant genetics and breeding have been discussed earlier (Winter and Kahl, 1995). The method has been used to study the major genes of four morphological traits mapped on an RFLP map:annual habit (Boudry et al, 1994), rhizomania resistance, monogermity, and hypocotyl color (Barzen et al, 1992(Barzen et al, , 1995. The monogerm or multigerm gene M-m has been mapped on the fifth linkage group and is closely linked with the makers 7, 49, 117, and 238a (Barzen et al, 1995).…”
