Rheological and isothermal crystallization characteristics of neat and calcium carbonate‐filled syndiotactic polypropylene

Abstract: Steady-state and oscillatory shear behavior of three neat syndiotactic polypropylene (s-PP) resins and a s-PP resin (s-PP#8) filled with CaCO 3 particles of varying content, size, and type of surface modification were investigated. All of the neat s-PP resins investigated exhibited the expected shear-thinning behavior. Both the storage and loss moduli increased with decreasing temperature. The shift factors used to construct the master curves were fitted well with both the Arrhenius and the Williams-Landel-Fer… Show more

“…All three— G ′, G″ , and η * —increased with increasing chalk content. Such behavior is typical of polymer composites including sPP filled with chalk . However, in the case of sPP/CC‐17, a decrease of temperature to 170 °C resulted in a change to a solid‐like behavior, with G′ exceeding G″ in the entire ω range.…”

“…Moreover, flow is known to modify the dynamics of polymer melts and to alter their crystallization kinetics. [19][20][21][22] As shear can be imposed, the hyphenated RheoDSC method offers unique opportunities for the investigation of flow-induced crystallization processes. Indeed, in situ monitoring of crystallization is not possible using a traditional DSC, since no flow field can be applied.…”
