Rheological Properties of Lunar Mortars

Abstract: NASA has revealed that they plan to resume manned missions and ensure the permanent presence of people in the so-called habitats on the Moon by 2024. Moon habitats are expected to be built using local resources—it is planned to use lunar regolith as aggregate in lunar concrete. Lunar concrete design requires a new approach in terms of both the production technology and the operating conditions significantly different from the Earth. Considering that more and more often it is assumed that the water present on t… Show more

“…with Si-rich clay or shale and heating it at temperatures of approximately 1450 °C [53,54]. Most research on space construction has been conducted on OPC terrestrial binders because of their high durability, strength, and simplicity [1,[55][56][57][58][59]. One of the disadvantages of the potential use of Portland cement mortar on Mars is the shortage of CaCO3 on Mars, which would not be sufficient for OPC production [8].…”

“…One of the reasons why it is important to know the electromagnetic properties of lunar regolith (lunar surface dust) is to be able to use this material as an in situ resource (ISR) [1][2][3]. The latter enables the permanent or temporary human presence on the Moon, which is of great importance for further human space exploration and colonization [4].…”
