Rheumatic Diseases and Molecular Physical Medicine – New Aspects

Abstract: Methods of physical medicine have played an invaluable role in the therapeutic concept of rheumatic diseases far into the second half of the past century -when drug-based treatments were limited and toxic. Since then, the significance of physical medicine has unfortunately been outshined by the rapid therapeutic success of new Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) and the biologics (so-called "anti-cytokine therapeutics") in the past 20 years. Nevertheless, physical medicine plays a still central role… Show more

“…At the other end of the thermotherapy spectrum, it has been shown that hyperthermia also alters cytokine levels [24]. Nowadays, physical therapy has been shown to change molecular parameters, which explains its profound and beneficial effects in rheumatic diseases [25].…”

“…pertaining to rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases generally conclude that most of the included studies have shown a clinical efficacy of spa therapy/ balneotherapy; however, more high-quality studies are needed to draw firm conclusions [3,[7][8][9][10][11]. Some evidence exists on mechanisms by which balneotherapy may improve the clinical symptoms of patients [12][13][14][15]. Notably, in some spa therapy studies, all the clinical benefits could not only be attributed to balneotherapy, as complex spa therapy programs include the other balneological treatments, physical therapy modalities, and/ or exercise.…”

“…Here, patients with RA had more benefit from radon application, since the pain-relieving capacity lasted up to three months, while the effects in AS patients were diminished after three weeks [ 108 ]. A meta-analysis of several trials pointed out that the observed effects seem to be significantly triggered by bone restoration following radon exposure [ 109 ].…”
