Rheumatoid factors in patients with silicosis with round nodular fibrosis of the lung in the absence of rheumatoid arthritis. With a note on the failure to induce such factors in animals

Abstract: Sera of 10 patients with silicosis and round nodular fibrosis of the lung in the absence of rheumatoid arthritis had positive rheumatoid factor tests. The proteins responsible for this were identical or at least closely related to those seen in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It was not possible to induce “rheumatoid factor‐like” proteins in rats and guinea pigs by prolonged injections of silica. The possible significance of these proteins in the pathogenesis of the disease is discussed.

“…Further evidence came from studies of silicotic workers. Workers with abnormal chest radiographs but without rheumatoid arthritis had high rates of positive serological findings, of rheumatoid factor in coal miners,8 and of antinuclear antibodies in sandblasters 9. Medical records of silicotic workers in Michigan, USA10 suggested more cases of rheumatoid arthritis than in the general population but the criteria for diagnosis differed in the case and comparison series.…”

“…It is known that rheumatoid factor, i.e., IgM antibody for slightly denatured serum IgG, is produced in silicosis human beings (124) and experimental animals (43), and that this is the most likely explanation for the Scheel phenomenon. In human disease the incidence of rheumatoid factor would not appear great enough to produce the hyaline material in silicotic lesions.…”
