Rhinomanometry evaluation of the effects of pre- and post-operative SMR on exercise

Abstract: Nasal airway resistance due to uncomplicated DNS was examined in 43 patients, and the results compared with those obtained following corrective surgery. The patients were examined independently by the two authors using a strict examination protocol. Rhinomanometry was carried out pre- and post-operatively at rest and after exercise assessing the worst and the better breathing nostrils separately. The results show that both resting and post-exercise nasal resistance was reduced following septal surgery.

“…Two of these studies Bohlin & Dahlqvist 8 and Jessen et al. 16 are included in the present review, but the study by Nofal & Thomas 26 is excluded from this review, as the study included some cases that had out‐fracture of the inferior turbinates, and therefore it is not possible to determine the effects of septal surgery alone.…”

“…14,15 Patients' sensation of obstruction will usually correlate well with the ndings of the experienced otorhinolaryngologist during rhinoscopy, although this is not always the case. 16 Considerable attention has been paid to quantifying the degree of nasal obstruction in terms of nasal resistance to air ow. 3 Cole found poor correlation between patients' sensation of chronic nasal stuf ness and objective measurements.…”

“…4 Patients, however, are more concerned with the sensation of nasal obstruction than with the NAR to air ow. 3,16 A low NAR may nevertheless be accompanied by a sensation of nasal obstruction and vice versa. The majority of the patients with nasal disease in our study has the symptom of nasal congestion or blockage.…”

“…Septal correction with reduction of hypertrophic nasal turbinates is considered standard treatment [12]. SMR has been shown to be effective in reducing nasal resistance in patients with uncomplicated deviated nasal septum [13]. Submucosal diathermy is shown to be a safe, effective procedure for improving nasal breathing in patients with chronic obstructive inferior turbinates, both on a short term and long term basis [14].…”
