Rhinovirus-Infected Patients in the COVID-19 Pandemic Period

Abstract: Human rhinovirus (HRV) is known as one of the most important respiratory pathogens, and the clinical characteristics of HRV infection might be similar to those of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We identified 11 HRV-infected patients by polymerase chain reactions of the HRV genes among 151 outpatients with fever. All nine adult patients had underlying diseases and finally improved with the appropriate treatment in this COVID-19 pandemic period. Differential diagnosis between HRV and severe acute respirato… Show more

“…Our study evidenced that while there was a decline in the positivity rates of other respiratory viruses, the diffusion of rhinovirus seems not to be affected, and it was frequently detected during the pandemic. We observed an increase in its circulation; a finding confirmed by other studies [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. The different pattern might be due to their greater stability under environmental conditions (e.g., heat, desiccation, and pH values) than enveloped viruses.…”

“…These respiratory infections are those mostly seen in moderate to severe COVID-19 infection. One of the most important respiratory pathogens in COVID-19 is the human rhinovirus known to cause rhino-bronchitis 23 meanwhile cough is one of the most common presenting symptoms of COVID-19, along with fever and loss of taste and smell 24 . When persist for weeks or months after SARS-CoV-2 infection, cough is accompanied by chronic fatigue, cognitive impairment, dyspnea, or pain 24 .…”

“…Even though there was an increase in the detection rate of RSV with the easing of public health measures, the influenza positivity remained at very low levels 15 . However, an increase in the circulation of rhinovirus was observed in Canada, as in Japan and Turkey 39,40 , which is often attributed to the greater environmental stability of non-enveloped viruses and greater efficacy of face masks in filtering out enveloped viruses. 41 There was a significant disparity in the number of weeks during which the samples were procured for surveillance.…”
