Ribosomal protein QM/RPL10 positively regulates defence and protein translation mechanisms during nonhost disease resistance

Abstract: Ribosomal proteins are an integral part of ribosomes and are involved in their biogenesis and assembly, thus regulating protein synthesis. It is difficult to attribute an individual function of translational activity to a single ribosomal protein. This difficulty is rooted in the highly cooperative nature of the interactions between ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) and ribosomal proteins. Ribosomal proteins regulate their own synthesis by controlling the expression of their transcripts in association with tra… Show more

“…In a mutation study in Arabidopsis (Falcone-Ferreyra et al, 2013), the altering of three copies of the RPL10 gene resident in the genome indicated that compensation between copies occurred and expression differed between tissues. These Arabidopsis studies and studies in human (Klauck et al, 2006;reviewed in Pollutri and Penzo, 2020) and Nicotiana benthamiana (Ramu et al, 2020) are consistent with the more general model that variation in essential RPs, such as RPL10, can moderate the translation activity of ribosomes to preferentially accept certain mRNAs and/or undertake non-ribosomal level regulation of transcription and signal transduction.…”

“…For example, silencing the ribosomal genes RPL12 and RPL19 in the model plant Nicotiana benthamiana or Arabidopsis compromised non-host resistance to multiple bacterial pathogens 95 . Similarly, it was also found that the ribosomal protein large subunit QM/RPL10 positively regulated defense and protein- translation mechanisms for the resistance of N. benthamiana 96 . The interaction of ribosomal protein RPL12 with the receptor for activated C‐Kinase 1 ( RACK1 ) also plays a key role in innate immunity in Arabidopsis 97 , 98 .…”

“…RPL10 was upregulated at early time points in resistant genotypes, however, in TN1 upregulation was at 6 dpi indicating mechanism of early sensing of stress in tolerant variety compared to sensitive genotype. Mutation/silencing of RPL10 in Arabidopsis , Nicotiana benthamiana showed susceptible phenotype and weak ABA response [ 43 , 44 ].…”
