“…"Palman 579" also had higher iron content (270.3 ± 2.59) in leaf tissue as compared to "PAU201" (127.3 ± 3.15) (data not shown) and consequently recorded higher grain/leaf iron content ratio (1.5, in comparison to 0.59 for PAU201) indicating that "Palman 579" may be equipped with efficient mineral uptake and transport mechanisms. Several factors including grain characteristics (number of aleurone layers, size of the embryo and caryopsis, available levels of the micronutrient at the root-soil interface, genetic systems for mineral uptake by roots, translocation and sequestration of minerals) and phloem sap loading and unloading rates within the reproductive organs, determines the quantity of micronutrients in the grains (Welch and Graham 2004;Sellappan et al 2009). More research is required to understand molecular and biochemical mechanisms for mineral uptake and transport using such novel diverse genotypes.…”

“…IR68144 (high Zn-density genotype) and IR64 (low Zn-density genotype) were obtained from the International Rice Research Institute, Manila, Philippines. It has been reported that Zn in the unpolished rice grains of IR68144 was about 37.0 mg/kg, whereas much lower Zn (25.5 mg/kg) was recorded in IR64 (Sellappan et al, 2009). Seeds were surface-sterilized by washing with 70% ethanol for 1 min and soaking in 0.01 g/ml sodium hypochlorite for 5 min, rinsed thoroughly in deionized water (resistivity ≥18.2 MΩ·cm), and imbibed in deionized water for 48 h at 30 °C.…”
