Rich allelic variations of Viviparous-1A and their associations with seed dormancy/pre-harvest sprouting of common wheat

Abstract: The allelic variations of Vp-1B have been confirmed to have close association with seed dormancy (SD) and pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) of Chinese wheat in previous research, but little was known regarding whether the alleles of two other orthologs of Vp1 on 3AL (Vp-1A) and 3DL (Vp-1D) are also present and related to these traits. In view of this, 11 primer pairs flanking the whole sequences of these two orthologs were designed to investigate their allelic variations. The results identified six alleles of Vp-1A … Show more

“…McKibbin et al (2002) reported that the majority of transcripts of Vp-1 homologues in modern wheat and ancestral species are mis-spliced, possibly contributing to susceptibility to preharvest sprouting. Whilst the Vp-1 locus does not appear to have figured strongly in PHS and dormancy QTL mapping studies, Yang et al (2007Yang et al ( , 2014 and Chang et al (2011) have presented evidence that allelic variants of Vp-1B and Vp-1A are associated with resistance to sprouting. These studies were conducted using collections of cultivars and should be validated in specifically constructed populations.…”

“…The most important loci, which control PHS tolerance, are located on three homologous chromosomes, 3A, 3B, and 3D (JAISLWAL et al, 2012), but 4A chromosome was also mentioned for containing the Phs gene (KUWAL et al, 2012). However, viviparous-1 gene family is associated with PHS tolerance in several cereals species (XIA et al, 2008;CHANG et al, 2011). On wheat the R genes, which are responsible for grain color, are also the biggest contributors to PHS tolerance (FOLEY;FENNIMORE, 1998;FLINTHAM et al, 2002).…”

“…Периоды покоя семян и УкПП наиболее тесно ассоциированы с рядом аллелей Vp-1B (Xia et al, 2009;Chang et al, 2010), а также с Vp-1A-локусом (Chang et al, 2011). Период покоя семян и УкПП можно улучшить путем встраивания в хромосому пшеницы Vp-1-генов от овсюга (Avena fatua) (McKibbin et al, 2002) или кукурузы (Zea mays) (Huang et al, 2012).…”
