Richardia brasiliensis Collected in Southern-Benin: Phytochemical Screening, Antimicrobial Activity and Toxicity

Abstract: Aims: The aim of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the R. brasiliensis aerial part extracts collected in southern-Benin. Methodology: The phytochemical screening was performed by a differential precipitation staining method. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts were made using conventional method with water and ethanol as solvent. The obtained extracts were used to evaluate their antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from skin infections and ten reference strain… Show more

“…The presence of metabolites was investigated directly on the plant powder. It is a qualitative analysis based on differential staining and precipitation reactions of the main groups of chemical compounds contained in the plant as described by Houghton and Raman [24] and used by Chabi-Sika et al [16].…”

“…The susceptibility of the microorganisms to the two extracts was performed using the Mueller Hinton (MH) solid media diffusion method, as previously described [16]. The sterile discs (Ø=6mm) containing 30 μl of each extract were deposited, under aseptic conditions, on previously inoculated microbial culture dishes.…”

“…Ethanolic and aqueous extracts obtained according to a previously developed method [13] were used in this study. The choice of these types of extracts is based on the way the plant is traditionally used.…”

“…The in-vitro antibacterial activity of extracts was demonstrated by solid medium diffusion method with the use of Whatman N°1 paper as previously described by Chabi Sika et al [13]. Thus, a bacterial pre-culture (1 colony in 1 mL of liquid Mueller-Hinton) from the previous day is diluted to obtain turbidity of 0.5 on the Mc Farland scale ( 108 CFU/ml) and reduced to 10 6 CFU/ml in sterile distilled water.…”
