Riding Hazards and Crash Risks Facing Malaysian Courier Riders in the Last Mile Delivery

Abstract: This study aims to determine the types of hazards and crash risks facing courier riders during delivery trips by recording the riding scenarios on their actual delivery route. A digital camera and a hands-free camera harness were used to hold the camera at the chest level to record the riding scenarios. Fifteen courier riders in the Klang Valley, Malaysia participated in the study. The final analysis reveals that a courier rider encounters 30 hazardous riding events and 5 near misses on av… Show more

“…However, due to the drivers' timely solution, such events, such as being cut off but the driver being able to brake in time, did not end up in an accident. Ibrahim et al [ 26 ] studied the near misses of motorcyclists by using driving recording cameras. Near misses were identified by behavior that prevented collisions, including abrupt braking, evasive maneuvering, and unexpected or unsafe riding scenarios.…”

“…Simons-Morton et al studied the "Keep Your Eyes" behavior on the road, while Naji et al [ 22 ] examined the risk levels of near-crash occurrences. Ibrahim et al [ 26 ] Self-Reported Data: The most common type of near-miss study involves self-reported data, where participants provide information about their perceived risk and experiences of near-miss incidents through questionnaires. It is worth noting that the majority of studies on vehicle near misses have concentrated on vulnerable groups, such as cyclists and bicyclists, rather than motorcycles.…”

“…Wu [17] suggested that the licensing system for takeaway e-bikes should be implemented to facilitate the enforcement of traffic laws. Ibrahim [18] argued that platforms should be responsible for providing relevant training modules, including job preparation and hazard perception trains. Qin [4] proposed that local governments should strengthen traffic control, enhance supervision of platforms, and introduce traffic violations part into the performance evaluation, which would accumulate to a certain level, and the takeaway companies and platforms would lose their business licenses.…”

“…These conditions include poor road planning, traffic enforcement systems, Philippine driving culture, and desensitization to road hazards when traversing familiar areas. 17,18 In general, delivery rider work is characterized as a particularly grueling occupation. In the context of road behavior, the stressful nature of the job, often associated with fatigue, irregular work hours, and unpredictable road conditions, contributes to riders' inclination to commit violations.…”
