WWW.JPHARMTECHNOL.COMCombined antimicrobial chemotherapy has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of Mycobacterium tuberculosis hominis infections, although it can cause various toxic manifestations. 1 Anti-tuberculous drugs can cause these adverse effects by impairment of Mitochondrial function involved in oxidative phosphorylation, 2 production of antibodies and immune complexes, 3 or some underlying toxic, idiosyncratic, and/or hypersensitivity mechanism. 4 The systemic toxic manifestations are mostly due to rifampin 5,6 and, out of these, hepatotoxicity is the most common. 7,8 Allergic and other autoimmune manifestations, including thrombocytopenia, are rare and, notably, these are seen in association with an intermittent anti-tubercular regimen. 8, 9 We report 2 patients on daily-dose anti-tubercular therapy who presented with a single episode of retinal hemorrhage. The probable cause for such a presentation in these 2 patients is discussed.
