Rigorous design of cyber-physical systems

Abstract: Cyber-physical systems have developed into a very active research field, with a broad range of challenges and research directions going from requirements, to implementation and simulation, as well as validation and verification to guarantee essential properties. In this survey paper, we focus exclusively on the following fundamental issue: how to link physicality and computation, continuous time-space dynamics with discrete untimed ones?We consider that cyber-physical system design flow involves the following … Show more

“…As mentioned in section 4.3, a few MPM approaches were found to employ more than one formalism. Among the 19 (24.1%) approaches that use at least 2 formalisms, Petri Nets are the most often combined with Hybrid Automata [70,63], Markov Chains [63,28], Discrete Events [71], Bayesian Networks [54], Automata [72] and Timed Automata [44]. Then comes Discrete Events, which is combined with Petri Nets [71], Automata [38,73], Hybrid Automata [74] and Bayesian Networks [39].…”

“…Authors in [4] discuss modelling, discretisation, executability, simulation, and implementation of cyber-physical systems. The paper highlights the need of methods and tools with appropriate design languages underpinned by a solid semantic foundation which can model complex electromechanical systems.…”

“…Several works [34,33,19] propose the digital twin based software architectures and foresee the importance of big data analysis and its linkage with the digital twin. The works in [4,18,30,27,16] focus more on the modelling aspects. Nevertheless, implementation details of the software architectures and their use case scenarios are somewhat abstracted.…”

“…We also lack theory for safe and efficient discretization as well as for deciding whether a hybrid model is executable. The interested reader can find a detailed discussion of these issues in [5].…”
