Ripple+: An Improved Scheme of Ripple Consensus Protocol in Deployability, Liveness and Timing Assumption

Abstract: Ripple acts as a real-time settlement and payment system to connect banks and payment providers. As the consensus support of the Ripple network to ensure network consistency, Ripple consensus protocol has been widely concerned in recent years. Compared with those Byzantine fault tolerant protocols, Ripple has a significant difference that the system can reach an agreement under decentralized trust model. However, Ripple has many problems both in theory and practice, which are mentioned in the previous research… Show more

“…Each node in the blockchain system maintains the same backup of the entire ledger, and in subsequent developments, some nodes have emerged to keep only partial ledger blockchains, such as Stefano's scheme [40]. Consistency of the digital ledgers on these nodes is guaranteed by consensus protocols [41,42] among the nodes. The implementation mechanism of the blockchain ensures that data cannot be changed once written to the blockchain.…”

“…This work suggests space for optimizations on the minimum UNL overlap, suggesting also the necessity of a malicious node estimator. Ripple+ [15] jumps into this gap and brings a mechanism for selecting UNLs based on a structure of core and leaf nodes.…”

“…In the paper "Ripple+: An Improved Scheme of Ripple Consensus Protocol in Deployability, Liveness and Timing Assumption", Ma et al [3] present Ripple+ to improve Ripple from three aspects: (1) Ripple+ employs a specific trust model to make it easy to deploy; (2) the primary and view change mechanism are joined to solve the liveness problem; (3) they improve details to make it suitable for weak synchrony assumption.…”
