“RIPTIDE” — an innovative recoil-proton track imaging detector

Abstract: Neutron detectors perform key tasks in many research fields as nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics as well as neutron dosimetry, radiotherapy, and radiation protection. Neutron detectors exhibiting tracking capability are still missing, although several approaches to neutron momentum reconstruction have been proposed. In this context, we aim at developing a novel RecoIl-Proton Track Imaging DEtection system “RIPTIDE”, in which the light output of a fast scintillation signal is used to perform a complet… Show more

“…Both cases are of interest for Riptide, as sketched in previous publications [11][12][13]. The Riptide detector concept consists of a cubic (216 cm 3 ) plastic scintillator (BC-408/EJ-200 [15]) surrounded by two (or more) optical systems of lenses focusing the proton tracks into CMOS cameras.…”

“…With the aim of addressing the challenge, a few years ago we proposed a novel detector concept named RIPTIDE (RecoIl Proton Track Imaging DEtector) [11][12][13]. It consists of a monolithic plastic scintillator coupled to CMOS imaging devices.…”

“…The proposed detectors [3][4][5][6] suffer in general from low efficiencies or the capability to determine only a single n-p interaction, thus limiting strongly their tracking capability. Here we present the ideas behind a novel design [7,8] of a neutron tracking detector, called RIPTIDE (RecoIl Proton Track Imaging DEtector) that overcomes both limitations.…”
