Rise and fall of shape resonances in thin films of BCS superconductors

Abstract: The confinement of a superconductor in a thin film changes its Fermi-level density of states and is expected to change its critical temperature T c . Previous calculations have reported large discontinuities of T c when the chemical potential coincides with a subband edge. By solving the BCS gap equation exactly, we show that such discontinuities are artifacts and that T c is a continuous function of the film thickness. We also find that T c is reduced in thin films compared with the bulk if the confinement po… Show more

“…The interaction is the same in both bands and we neglect interband coupling, for simplicity. In this model, for V independent of the density n, the critical temperature can only increase with increasing n [34,35], in contradiction with the observations [6,7]. To explain the dome, V must drop with increasing n [7].…”

“…Theoretical proposals have been put forward that strong T c enhancement can be achieved close to Lifshitz transition in striped 32,33 and layered systems 34 . Superconductivity in two-band models close to a Lifshitz transition is also being studied 27,35,36 . Recent experiments on monolayer FeSe 37 do suggest enhancement of superconductivity by a Lifshitz transition.…”
