“…Moreover, none of the included studies examined adverse events. Adverse events or side effects are heavily understudied in psychotherapy research, 83 although it is perfectly reasonable to expect that psychotherapeutic interventions might be not effective for some patients or even worsen their health condition. Consequently, we encourage future research to recognize established categorizations of psychotherapy side effects 76 and derive research questions from them to establish a firm overview over this understudied problem.…”

“…While there is ample evidence of the effectiveness of psychological interventions (Carr et al 2021;Huhn et al 2014;Lambert 2013;van Agteren et al 2021), negative effectsboth lasting and transient-have been neglected in psychological research (Barlow 2010;Dimidjian and Hollon 2010;Ladwig, Rief, and Nestoriuc 2014;Lilienfeld 2007;Margraf and Scholten 2018) compared to other health sciences (Berk and Parker 2009;Duggan et al 2014;Vaughan et al 2014). Similarly, with respect to pharmacological trials that are more focused on assessing harm, reporting of negative effects is far from perfect (Abdel Shaheed et al 2022).…”

“…For this study, negative effects are broadly defined as 'all negative events that occur parallel or in the wake of treatment' (Linden 2013). This encompasses all subtypes of transient as well as lasting negative effects such as harm, deterioration, (severe) adverse events, adverse reactions, side effects, unwanted events, treatment dropout and malpractice reactions (Linden 2013;Linden and Schermuly-Haupt 2014;Margraf and Scholten 2018;Rozental et al 2014). For a better overview, we chose this broad definition of negative effects to include all measurements of all types of negative effects in this review.…”
