“…Another prominent catalyst for civil strife and/or radical changes in power is the lack-or erosion-of civil and economic liberties, whether acquired legally or otherwise. Many political commentators note the increased likelihood of violent confrontation when democratic and civil liberties decline (Bauer et al, 2021;DiMaggio, 2022). Somewhat counterintuitively, but well-documented empirically, Walter (2022) argues that civil wars in the modern era are most common among quasi-democratic and quasi-autocratic states rather than fully autocratic (or fully democratic) states.…”

“…Throughout the fall of 2020, rightwing media—including Fox News and talk radio personalities—were sympathetic to Trump’s ‘Big Lie’ propaganda on the election. The late Rush Limbaugh trafficked in his own conspiracies, claiming that the Democratic Party was attempting to infect Trump with Covid-19 to ensure his election defeat; that ‘radical leftists’ and ‘the Democratic Party’ were ‘ballot harvesting’ in swing states to artificially pump up Democratic votes; that Venezuela was secretly conspiring with the Dominion and Smartmatic electronic vote-counting companies to distort the election results; that the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020 was intended ‘to take down the U.S. economy’ and impose ‘globalism and world government’ on the United States; that US official Covid-19 death counts were exaggerated by ‘fake causes’ being entered into death certificates and through the ‘staged overrunning of hospitals’; and that Covid-19 cases were ‘being reported in states that Trump needs to win’—implying that Democrats were coordinating a campaign to undermine Trump’s reelection (DiMaggio, 2021). These claims were all without foundation, but they reinforced Trump’s baseless and conspiratorial election propaganda.…”
