Risk and Protective Factors for Childhood Asthma: What Is the Evidence?

Abstract: In order to summarize the principal findings on risk and protective factors for childhood asthma, we retrieved systematic reviews on these topics in children (ages 1 to 18 years), up to January 2016, through MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, SCOPUS and CDSR. Two hundred twenty seven studies were searched from databases. Among those, 41 systematic reviews (SRs) were included: 9 focused on prenatal factors, 5 on perinatal factors, and 27 on postnatal factors. Of these 41 SRs, 83% had good methodological quality, as deter… Show more

“…environment and behavior) risk factors. Indeed, current evidence suggests causal roles for potentially modifiable exposures or behaviors on asthma, including but not limited to secondhand smoke (SHS), overweight or obesity, unhealthy dietary patterns, changes in the gut microbiome, chronic pre- and perinatal stress, and indoor and outdoor pollutants (4). Although children in high-risk populations are often concurrently exposed to several of these risk factors, most published studies have focused on a single risk factor (adjusting for the presence of other risk factors) or on the interaction between two risk factors for asthma (5, 6).…”
