Risk Assessment and Classification of Day Reporting Center Clients

Abstract: The day reporting center (DRC) has become an increasingly popular sentencing option in many states that are using more community-based alternatives to jail and prison sentences. To protect the community and improve the likelihood of rehabilitation, improving the quality of risk assessment and classification at the DRC is an essential task. In this regard, with data collected in Nebraska, the study sought to identify significant variables influencing both termination from a DRC program and recidivism. This stud… Show more

“…Interpreting logit models is controversial in the academic field and it is even more difficult for practitioners to interpret them. To overcome this difficulty, it is useful to transform log odds into probabilities that are often used in our daily life (Kim et al, 2008;Roncek, 1991). As yet, this statistical approach has not been widely used for the study of criminal justice.…”

“…Applying the method employed by Kim et al (2008), this analysis estimated the probability of officers shooting at citizens based on the significant coefficients in the main-effect model in Table 5. Five hypothetical scenarios were created for comparison purposes.…”

“…The effects of the statistically significant independent variables on the change in probability of the dependent variable can be calculated using a two step approach (Roncek, 1991; see also Mertler & Vannatta, 2005;Kim, Joo, & McCarty, 2008). The first step involves using the natural logarithm of the predicted value of the odds (Equation 1).…”

“…Research on CRCs has largely focused on the offender characteristics that correlate with successful program completion (e.g., Carr & Cassidy, 2016; Craddock, 2004; Kim, Joo, & McCarty, 2008; Kim, Spohn, & Foxall, 2007; Roy & Grimes, 2002). While studies of this nature directly contribute to the development of more effective, targeted, and evidence-based enrollment and treatment protocols, they tell us little about the general impact of these programs using the metrics common in the correctional program evaluation literature.…”
