Risk Assessment Profile and Strategies for Success Instrument: Determining Prelicensure Nursing Students’ Risk for Academic Success

Abstract: The ultimate outcomes for succeeding in a collegiate prelicensure nursing program are earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and passing the NCLEX-RN®. The Risk Assessment Profile, Strategies for Success (RAPSS) is a criterion-based instrument that incorporates demographic and academic risk indicators. A convenience sample (N = 255) obtained retrospectively from student files was used to determine whether the RAPSS could be used to predict whether completers of a baccalaureate, prelicensure program wi… Show more

“…CGPA significantly contributes to the success of the licensure examination (Amankwaa, Agyemang-Dankwah, & Boateng, 2015;Foley, 2016;Grant, 2015;Penprase, Meghan Harris, & Qu, 2013;Ristekdikti, 2018;Siswadi Y, 2018). Moreover, the nursing subject grade was a significant predictor for licensure examination (Breckenridge, Wolf, & Roszkowski, 2012 ). Other studies found differently, in that there were no significant correlations between CGPA and academic achievement (Siswadi Y, Sommers L C, 2017;Ukpabi, 2008).…”

“…Other studies found differently, in that there were no significant correlations between CGPA and academic achievement (Siswadi Y, Sommers L C, 2017;Ukpabi, 2008). Non-academic factors that contribute to the licensure examination include sociodemography, which includes gender, age and the educational background of the parent (Amankwaa et al, 2015;Breckenridge et al, 2012). School accreditation level also contributed to the performance of the licensure examination (Dator, 2016;Gutierrez N P, 2016).…”

“…In nursing education, research on admission criteria is limited, but 2 studies found that only science GPA, science course repetition, 1 nursing specific standardized test, and family income were effective predictors of graduation and licensure examination pass rates 26,27 . The results indicate that student success, although predicted by some academic metrics, was also influenced by nonacademic factors such as income.…”

“…These circumstances create a need for faculty to promptly identify these students and engage them in learning activities to improve academic achievement. Faculty can refer students to the college's success centers, encourage them to join study groups, and implement regular face-to-face remediation sessions (Breckenridge, Wolf, & Roszkowski, 2012) [4]. Students who participate in remediation and continue to struggle are considered a "student at risk for failure" (Carrick, 2011: p. 80) [3].…”
