Risk‐based environmental remediation: Decision framework and role of uncertainty

Abstract: A methodology for incorporating uncertainty in model predictions into a risk‐based decision for environmental remediation is illustrated, considering polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) sediment contamination and uptake by winter flounder in New Bedford Harbor, Massachusetts. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses are conducted for a model that predicts the sediment remediation volume required to meet a biota tissue concentration criterion. These evaluations help to identify the variables that most significantly cont… Show more

“…Since most scientific estimates are probabilistic determinations requiring reliable data, uncertainty can never be eliminated. Fortunately, some statistical methods will quantify the probable benefits of additional studies (e.g., Goodman 1986, Anderson et al 1993, Taylor et al 1993, Dakins et al 1994. One frustrating denial of reality is that sufficient evidence can be gathered on complex problems so as to make the outcome of any policy decision certain.…”

“…Value of information analysis provides a framework for analysing uncertainty within economic analysis, by focussing on the value of reducing uncertainty through further information [1]. Such analysis adopts a Bayesian approach to sensitivity analysis [2,3].…”
