Risk Factors and Incidence of Escherichia coli Producing Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) in Dairy Cattle

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the risk factor and insidence of Extended-spectrum b-lactamase (ESBL) produced by Escherichia coli in dairy cattle. The samples obtained were 38 rectal swabs from dairy cows from the Successful Mutual Livestock Group, Deyeng Village, Kediri Regency, East Java. The study started with interviews and observations using a questionnaire to obtain data on risk factors (source of drinking water, cleanliness of feedlots, cleanliness of drinking places, administration of antibiotics, histor… Show more

“…The presence of coliform and E. coli can cause health problems for consumers, especially if the meat is not cooked correctly (Fikri et al, 2022). Coliform bacteria contamination can be through the hands of the seller, unhygienic cutting so that bacteria from cutting tools can move to meat, from less sterile packaging, from water used to clean meat or cutlery which may be contaminated and from the meat itself (Collin and Huey, 2015;Dameanti et al, 2022). E. coli is one of the indicator bacteria for sanitation (Price and Wildeboer, 2017).…”

“…S. aureus remains the most common pathogenic bacteria isolated from mastitis milk samples [14]. However, Blitar Regency, East Java province is one of the regions where Indonesia's largest fresh cow's milk is produced [15]. In line with the high amount of milk production and the dairy cattle population in Blitar, reports of cases of subclinical mastitis are also found with the habits of breeders who pay little attention to the care of dairy cows affected by subclinical mastitis, which will eventually develop into clinical mastitis [16].…”

“…Resistance to more than three types of antibiotics from different groups is called multidrug resistance (MDR). Antibiotic resistance can occur through mechanisms of transfer of resistance genes between various bacteria vertically or horizontally (transformation, conjugation, and transduction) (Amer et al 2020;Dameanti et al 2023).…”
