Risk factors and prevalence of taeniasis among the Karen people of Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province, Thailand

Abstract: Taeniasis remains a prevalent public health problem in Thailand. National helminthiasis surveys report only the incidence of Taenia spp. eggs. The ability to differentiate Taenia species using morphological and molecular techniques is vital for epidemiological surveys. This study detected taeniasis carriers and other helminthic infections by Kato’s thick smear technique and identified the Taenia species by multiplex PCR. The study subjects were the ethnic Karen people in Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province, T… Show more

“…The egg-based Kato-Katz (KK) technique is the most frequently used method to diagnose helminth infections, especially for STH in Southeast Asia and Thailand [8][9][10][11]13]. This technique is recommended by WHO for diagnosis and monitoring large-scale treatment programmes implemented for STH infection [14], as it is a relatively low-cost, standardized tool that is easy to perform in low-resource field settings [15].…”

“…This observation is consistent with previous reports from Vietnam and Thailand, which showed men had 2.8-and 4.0-times higher risk Taenia spp. infection than women, respectively [52,53]. The high infection rate in men indicate that men commonly consume more undercooked beef, pork, or pork visceral organs.…”

“…The nationwide survey in 2014 revealed 0.7% national prevalence with 1.6% in the northeast [16]. However, the prevalence can be varied when spotting in different regions [18,39,46]. The lowering prevalence of this parasite in this area suggested that the risky behavior may not be famous or will be altered in the population habits in this region.…”
