Risk factors associated with post–kidney transplant malignancies: an article from the Cancer-Kidney International Network

Abstract: In kidney transplant recipients, cancer is one of the leading causes of death with a functioning graft beyond the first year of kidney transplantation, and malignancies account for 8–10% of all deaths in the USA (2.6 deaths/1000 patient-years) and exceed 30% of deaths in Australia (5/1000 patient-years) in kidney transplant recipients. Patient-, transplant- and medication-related factors contribute to the increased cancer risk following kidney transplantation. While it is well established that the overall immu… Show more

“…One should also take into account the undesirable effects of therapy. One example is the fact that patients treated with cyclosporin A have an increased risk of neoplasia (Sprangers, Nair, Launay‐Vacher, Riella, & Jhaveri, ). The premise for the research conducted by Paul et al Was the observation of an increased risk of cancer in patients after transplants treated with immunosuppressive drugs to which cyclosporin A belongs.…”

“…Immunosuppressive drugs are the most important risk factor as they decrease immunologic control of viral-oncologic infections and immunesurveillance. Although it is an assumed fact that increased immunosuppressive dosage is associated with an increased risk of cancers secondary to kidney transplantation, the disruptive effects of immunosuppressive agents are not fully known yet (18).…”

“…Kidney transplantation has developed to the point where it clearly results in higher patient survival, higher quality of life, and lower health care costs compared to dialysis 1,2 and the 1-year graft survival after a deceased donor kidney transplantation is 95%. 4 Many patients experience significant side effects from immunosuppressive medicines including diarrhea, diabetes, and tremors, thereby diminishing quality of life. For example, approximately 20% of patients die in the first 10 years after a successful kidney transplantation.…”
