Background Patients requiring assisted reproductive techniques may have a higher rate of congenital malformations. Some rare complications of pregnancy might be related to such abnormalities. Torsions of the umbilical cord resulting in fetal death have previously been described exclusively in pregnancies following spontaneous conception. Case The case of 37 year old gravida I, para O woman with a twin pregnancy after intracytoplasmatic sperm injection and intrauterine death of one twin at approximately 30 weeks' gestation is presented. The surviving twin was delivered by cesarean section at 31 weeks after spontaneous onset of labor and recurrent fetal bradycardia. The intraoperative situs showed that the demised twin had suffered from multiple umbilical cord torsions leading to intrauterine hypoperfusion. Conclusion Umbilical torsion leading to fetal death might represent a previously unrecognized complication in women requiring assisted reproductive techniques, but this problem is known to occur in pregnancies achieved by natural methods.

The study of knots and links from a probabilistic viewpoint provides insight into the behavior of ''typical'' knots, and opens avenues for new constructions of knots and other topological objects with interesting properties. The knotting of random curves arises also in applications to the natural sciences, such as in the context of the structure of polymers. We present here several known and new randomized models of knots and links. We review the main known results on the knot distribution in each model. We discuss the nature of these models and the properties of the knots they produce. Of particular interest to us are finite type invariants of random knots, and the recently studied Petaluma model. We report on rigorous results and numerical experiments concerning the asymptotic distribution of such knot invariants. Our approach raises questions of universality and classification of the various random knot models.

The authors present their experience in prenatal diagnosis of placental and umbilical cord pathologies, using three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) in the rendering and tomography ultrasound imaging (TUI) modes, associated with color Doppler in some cases. Cases of placenta accreta/placenta previa, circumvallate placenta, succenturiate lobe, true knot of the umbilical cord, nuchal cord, and marginal/velamentous umbilical cord insertion are presented. 3DUS can contribute to improve the accuracy of prenatal diagnosis of placenta and umbilical cord pathologies.
