Risk factors for Baerveldt glaucoma drainage implantation for uveitic glaucoma

Abstract: Uveitic glaucoma (UG) is sometimes intractable, including intricate interaction between intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation associated with inflammation and side effects of steroids. Based on the Tube Versus Trabeculectomy study in refractory glaucoma results in 2012, tube shunt surgeries have been performed for UG, but few reports have focused on UG. We retrospectively examined the surgical efficacy, complications, and risk factors in 62 eyes with UG that underwent Baerveldt glaucoma drainage device (BGD) im… Show more

“…9 . Other studies with small sample sizes reported the surgical results of BGI separately for each type of glaucoma [10][11][12][13][14][15] . The present study is unique because it examined 204 eyes of Japanese patients with different types of glaucoma and evaluated the long-term surgical outcome of BGI (350-mm 2 endplate) surgery.…”

“…Manako et al have recently reported significant IOP reductions from around 30 mmHg to 15 mmHg 1 year postoperation following BGI surgery in UG patients. This corresponded to a 1-year success rate of 88% [ 112 ]. The authors reported that the use of immunosuppressive treatment (that indicated a strong inflammatory response) was a risk factor for failure.…”
