Risk factors for infection with Giardia duodenalis in pre-school children in the city of Salvador, Brazil

Abstract: SUMMARYA cross-sectional study of 694 children aged 2 to 45 months selected from 30 clusters throughout the city of Salvador, Bahia (pop. 2 . 3 million) was carried out as part of a longitudinal study of diarrhoea in order to identify risk factors for infection with Giardia duodenalis. Variables studied included three social and demographic factors (such as mother's education and marital status), five relating to the peri-domestic environment (rubbish disposal, open sewers, paving of the street), seven relatin… Show more

“…The direction and strength of the association between infection with G. duodenalis and standard of living was consistent with an earlier study in Salvador 21 ; however, in contrast to helminths, no significant positive association was observed between infection with G. duodenalis and standard of living. Almost 13% of preschoolers were infected with these waterborne protozoan parasites which often cause infectious diarrhea and gastroenteritis, in contrast to other studies Cad.…”

“…Furthermore, given the observational nature of our study, it is not possible to establish a causal association between growth indicators and intestinal parasitic infections. Finally, future studies should collect information on the presence of domestic animals in and around the home as this is also a risk factor for transmission of G. duodenalis 21 .…”

“…This result corroborates the hypothesis of interpersonal transmission 9,11 . The absence of a bathroom in the home was heavily associated (OR = 2.56) with G. duodenalis infection.…”

“…In Salvador, prevalence of infection in children 2 to 45 months of age was 13.7% 9 , while in Fortaleza prevalence amongst children up to 48 months of age was much lower, only 8.8% 10 . The high infection rate in our study can be explained by the population's characteristics.…”

“…The existence of a toilet in the house was associated with fewer helminthic infections, as in the study conducted by Prado et al (31) . The helminth transmission mode, closely associated with ground contamination, may explain this finding.…”
