Risk factors for inguinal hernia in adult male Nigerians: A case control study

Abstract: Family history of inguinal hernia and strenuous work activity are the significant risk factors for this condition in our setting. Public health initiatives targeting those at higher risk of hernia development may help early detection and treatment; thereby reducing morbidity and mortality from this condition.

“…4,10 Although the risk factors for the development of groin hernia include a family history of hernia, a higher work activity level, chronic obstructive airway disease and a BMI of <25 kg/m 2 , these factors do not seem to affect routine blood test results. 4,10,11 In fact, as shown in Table 2, all average blood test results in the younger adult group were within the reference range in our hospital. In the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2017 in Japan, the proportions of patients who required medication for hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and diabetes among Japanese individuals aged ≥70 years were 51.7%, 28.4% and 13.1%, respectively.…”

“…Patients of advanced age with groin hernias were chosen for evaluation of blood tests in the present study, because groin hernia is a benign disease that requires a preoperative evaluation and occurs more frequently among older and physically active individuals . Although the risk factors for the development of groin hernia include a family history of hernia, a higher work activity level, chronic obstructive airway disease and a BMI of <25 kg/m 2 , these factors do not seem to affect routine blood test results . In fact, as shown in Table , all average blood test results in the younger adult group were within the reference range in our hospital.…”

“…We compared images of the esophagogastric junctional area obtained from young and old (> 50 years old) normal volunteers, which clearly showed similar His angles, size of the diaphragmatic hiatus, MI‐LES length, MI‐LES opening size, and wall thickness of the distal esophagus. Our observations confirmed previously published findings that showed minimal age‐related changes of the EGJ . Measurements of the posterior esophageal wall showed it to be thicker than the anterior wall at the EGJ in the normal volunteers as well as patients with reflux esophagitis.…”

“…This study showed that individuals who smoke heavily had a decreased HR for undergoing a groin hernia repair, whereas other smaller case–control studies examining risk factors among men [1, 23, 24], women [25], and both genders [26] have failed to show any significant effect of smoking. There are, however, two studies with results that correlate with ours.…”
