Risk Factors for Intracerebral Hemorrhage in the General Population

Abstract: Background and Purpose-Although data on some risk factors for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) already are beyond doubt, for other factors, the evidence is less clear. We performed a systematic overview of case-control and cohort studies on risk factors for ICH. Methods-We searched MEDLINE, LILACS, EXTRAMED, and Pascal from 1966 to 2001 to identify studies. Studies were included if they met predefined methodological criteria. When possible, 2ϫ2 tables were extracted and combined with the Mantel-Haenszel method. … Show more

“…A meta-analysis performed in 2003 showed that the main risk factors for ICH were male gender, age, hypertension and alcohol intake. High cholesterol levels seem to be a protective factor against HS, but individuals with this condition are more prone to develop IS 22 . Our fi ndings showed that hypertension was the main risk factor for stroke.…”

“…Individuals of Asian, African, and Latin American origin tend to have a higher frequency of primary hemorrhage than persons of European origin [1]. In addition, although primary hemorrhage accounts for 10 to 17% of all strokes in Western countries, in Asian it is approximately 25% [3].…”

“…Some of the potentially modifiable ischemic stroke risk factors being studied are listed in Table 2 [21,22]. Risk factors for primary intracerebral hemorrhage are shown in Table 3 and overlap to some degree with those for ischemic stroke [3].…”

“…The strongest risk factor for cerebral hemorrhage is widely recognized to be hypertension 9, 10, 11, 12, 13. In the Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes (SPS3) trial, the rate of hemorrhagic stroke was significantly reduced by a systolic blood pressure target of <130 mm Hg, compared with a systolic blood pressure target of 130 to 149 mm Hg in patients receiving aspirin alone or aspirin plus clopidogrel 14.…”
