Risk Factors for Pneumococcal Colonization of the Nasopharynx in Alaska Native Adults and Children

Abstract: Higher colonization prevalence may partially explain increased IPD rates seen in those lacking in-home water services. Improving availability of sanitation services and reducing household crowding may reduce the burden of IPD in this population.

“…However, Warao houses generally resemble each other in surface area of the rooms, and the index in our study is commonly used [12,37]. A link between household crowding and colonisation with respiratory pathogens has been observed in many other populations [12,37,38]. Another explanation for the lack of this link in our study may be that Warao people generally have a nomadic lifestyle.…”

“…If there is a large variety in surface area of the rooms, the crowding index (number of people per room) may not be the optimal measure of actual crowding. However, Warao houses generally resemble each other in surface area of the rooms, and the index in our study is commonly used [12,37]. A link between household crowding and colonisation with respiratory pathogens has been observed in many other populations [12,37,38].…”

“…Populations in the developing world, as well as economically disadvantaged individuals living in Western countries, have high rates of colonization with respiratory organisms such as pneumococci and suffer from an increased burden of clinical disease (103). Similar to populations in the developing world, the indigent Bedouin residents of southern Israel, who live in crowded households and have large families, exhibit early acquisition and high respiratory pathogen colonization rates, as well as increased morbidity and hospitalization rates for infectious diseases (104).…”
