Risk Factors for Stroke Due to Cerebral Infarction in Young Adults

Abstract: Diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, current smoking, and long-term heavy alcohol consumption are major risk factors for stroke in young adults. Given that the majority of these factors are either correctable or modifiable, prevention strategies may have the potential to reduce the impact of stroke in this age group.

“…Young patients differ from other patients with stroke with regards to risk factors, causes, and outcome of stroke. [20][21][22][23][24][25] Therefore, the objectives of our study were to characterize PI and PSI in young patients with first-ever stroke and to explore whether they are associated with worse 3-month outcome and longterm mortality or recurrent vascular events.…”

“…This is slightly lower than what the many studies mentioned it (17). CT scan detected white matter changes in 31 patients (30.7%) that were lower than what has been mentioned in many other studies (12,16). These two findings may be as a result of different CT scan protocols or programs used in Iran compared with other radiologic centers.…”

“…So the term small deep infarcts are preferred. In a recent study, diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) showed multiple regions of increased signal intensity in 16% in either a single (6 patients) or different (4 patients) vascular territories, strongly indicating an embolic stroke mechanism (11). LIs due to cholesterolembolism from the aortic arch have also been described (12). In the Barcelona Stroke Registry, 39(11%) of the 3.577 acute stroke patients had an LI (13).…”

“…In the Baltimore-Washington Cooperative Young Stroke Study 19 which compared 296 cases of incident ischemic stroke among black and white adults aged 18-44 years with 1220 community based adults of the same age group, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and current smoking emerged as important risk factors. Similarly, in a comparison of 201 consecutive patients with first onset stroke due to cerebral infarction aged 15-55 years and the same number of matched neighbourhood control subjects conducted as part of the Melbourne Risk Factor Study 20 , hypertension, diabetes mellitus, current smoking, heart disease and long term heavy alcohol consumption were major risk factors. The two case control studies from India that included ischemic stroke in all age groups suggested that hypertension, diabetes mellitus and smoking are important risk factors for stroke in India as they are worldwide 21 .…”
