Risk factors for testicular germ cell tumours by histological tumour type

Abstract: Summary There are two main histological groups of testicular germ cell tumours, which may have different risk factors. Some authors have analysed potential risk factors by histological group but few consistent differences have been identified. In this paper we examine risk factors for pure seminoma and other tumours using data from the United Kingdom case control study of testicular cancer. Seven hundred and ninetyfour cases were included in the study, each with a matched control; 400 cases had pure seminoma t… Show more

“…Cryptorchidism in children with GCTs has been noted previously in case series and reports (Li and Fraumeni, 1972;Huddart et al, 1990;Mukai et al, 1998) and in isolated cases in studies with comparison groups (Johnston et al, 1986;Wanderas et al, 1998). The excess risk in this study was primarily confined to gonadal tumours, with increased risks evident for seminomas, yolk-sac tumours, and other non-seminomas, which is consistent with what has been reported for adults (Coupland et al, 1999).…”

“…Some case -control studies conducted analysis separated by seminomas and non-seminomas (Moss et al, 1986;Swerdlow et al, 1987a,b;Prener et al, 1992;Akre et al, 1996;Skakkebaek, 1996, 1997;Sabroe and Olsen, 1998;Wanderas et al, 1998;Coupland et al, 1999;Weir et al, 2000), but results were not consistent and only part of them were in favour of etiological heterogeneities (Moss et al, 1986;Swerdlow et al, 1987a,b;Akre et al, 1996;Coupland et al, 1999). Most of these previous studies included a limited number of subjects with a little power to perform subgroup analyses.…”
