Risk factors for unintentional injuries among the rural elderly: a county-based cross-sectional survey

Abstract: This study aimed to provide evidence for the prevention and reduction of unintentional injuries in the rural elderly by analysing epidemiological data of injuries among rural older adults (65+) and identifying the involved risk and protective factors. This study analysed all information, including the social demographic characteristics, chronic disease condition, lifestyle, living environment, mental health, activities of daily living and detailed information about the nature of the injuries. Chi-square tests,… Show more

“…Insufficient sleep was also found to be significantly associated with injury. This finding is consistent with the results of previous studies [30][31][32][33], with one systematic review and meta-analysis reporting that 13% of occupational injuries were explained by sleep issues alone [31]. Indeed, sleep is an essential physiological function and sleep problems can result in reduced attention span and concentration, as well as daytime drowsiness, all of which increase the likelihood of errors and injuries.…”

“…Household structures in the Philippines are steadily changing [35]. Migration among the predominantly young workforce has reduced the number of individuals rendering care assistance and attention to older adult household members left in rural areas, increasing their risk of having an accident within their homes, which is comparable to a study from China [21]. In addition, health insurance coverage among older Filipinos has increased over the years, enhancing the seeking of health care and an awareness with conditions, including injuries.…”

“…To further elucidate the patterns and particularly the characteristics associated with self-reported injuries among older adults, several socioeconomic and demographic variables, as well as health characteristics, that have been theoretically and empirically linked with experience of having injuries, were included [5,9,[19][20][21]30]. Participant's age was categorized as follows: 60-69, 70-79, and 80 years or over.…”

“…Injuries can be intentional or unintentional. Risk factors for the occurrence of injuries include chronic diseases (e.g., DM, CKD, orthostatic hypotension, cataracts) and lifestyle factors (e.g., walking stick, sleep duration, mental health) [5]. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between gout and the occurrence of injury.…”
