Risk for suicidal ideation in the U.S. Air Force: An ecological perspective.

Abstract: Addressing depressive symptoms and alcohol use, facilitating healthy relationship functioning, and increasing job satisfaction and social support may aid military suicide prevention efforts. These findings illustrate the importance of attending to multiple levels of potential influence when designing integrated suicide prevention and intervention programs.

“…Family and community support have also been associated with reductions in health problems including the severity of depression [134,139,141,167], symptoms of posttraumatic stress [41,71,111,134,139,141,167], alcohol dependence [134], and suicidal ideation [118,134,142]. Further, in reserve members, a lack of perceived military and non-military support has been associated with increased reporting of symptoms of posttraumatic stress, common mental disorders and alcohol misuse [83].…”

“…34,36,37 One study 38 also found that some types of substance use were linked to different stressors in men and women, which may be representative of coping with substances. In the study by Langhinrichsen-Rohling et al, 3 there were also some sex differences regarding which correlates were associated with suicidal ideation in the adjusted model. For example, personal coping was only a correlate in men.…”

“…Meanwhile, religious service attendance had a buffering influence on the link between sexual assault and depressive symptoms in female veterans. 30 In a study 3 of a representative sample of Air Force members, several factors including personal coping and social support-related variables were associated with less suicidal ideation in women in unadjusted analyses, while religious involvement showed no association. In a model including other potential risk and protective correlates, social support, family, and workplace relationship satisfaction emerged as negatively related to ideation.…”
