Risk of Endophthalmitis in Boston Type 1 Keratoprosthesis Combined with Vitrectomy and Silicone Oil Insertion

Abstract: Purpose. To identify the incidence of endophthalmitis and visual outcomes in eyes with Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis combined with pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil insertion (KPro + PPV + SOI) as compared to eyes receiving Boston type 1 keratoprosthesis (KPro) alone. Patients and Methods. Retrospective chart review of 29 eyes of 27 patients with KPro having at least 12-month follow-up. Thirteen of these eyes had hypotony and/or retinal detachment in addition to corneal pathology and thus received KPro +… Show more

“…[3] Therefore, vitrectomy with SO filling can reduce the incidence of endophthalmitis. [5,6] However, in recent years, due to improvements in surgical techniques, PPV cases have demonstrated a very low incidence rate of endophthalmitis, ranging from 0.03% to 0.04%, with the occurrence after SO filling being even rarer. [7,8] In the case presented here, endophthalmitis occurred in the state of SO filling after vitrectomy, a condition with an exceptionally low incidence.…”

“…The incidence of KPro-associated endophthalmitis reported in North American centers varies between 0% and 32.5%. 4,7,[11][12][13][14][15][22][23][24] The largest cohorts narrow this bracket down to 2.9% to 15.5% over up to 47 months (Table S2, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/ICO/ B155). 4,7,[11][12][13][14][15] Incidence rates were only reported in 3 studies, ranging between 1.4% and 3.0% per eye-year.…”
