Risk of hepatitis B virus infection in patients with eczema or psoriasis of the hand.

Abstract: A month later he was readmitted complaining of fever, malaise, and lethargy. Intravenous pyelography disclosed a non-functioning left kidney, and retrograde studies on the left side showed a stricture of the ureter at the level of L4. Laparotomy confirmed continued blockage of the ureter by dense fibrous tissue and also a small abscess at the site of the T-tube ureterostomy. Left nephrectomy was performed. Histological examination of the kidney showed severe acute pyelonephritis secondary to ureteric obstructi… Show more

“…The increased risk of HCV among patients with psoriasis has been reported in previous studies [27][28][29] and the association was considered to be independent of interferon use [28]. The association between HBV and psoriasis has been controversial in previous studies [26,30]. It is possible that a higher HBV carrier rate in Taiwan [31,32] may result in a higher statistical power to detect an association between HBV and psoriasis in our study.…”

“…2,3,5 Guadagnino et al showed a higher risk of infection with HBV in patients with chronic psoriasis and eczema in the Naples, where the prevalence of HBV surface antigen was 4-18% in the general Italian population. 6 The onset of psoriasis has been described in patients suffering from chronic HCV infection after the initiation of interferon-a therapy. [7][8][9] Epidemiological studies examining the frequency of HCV infection in psoriasis have yielded mixed results.…”

“…Because hepatitis B and C are prevalent in the overall population of Taiwan 6 , patients with psoriasis should be tested for hepatitis, as systemic treatment may increase the detection rate of hepatitis and explain the association between psoriasis and high prevalence of hepatitis. On the other hand, recent studies in India 7 , the United States 8 , and Israel 9 revealed that psoriasis was not significantly associated with increased HBV infection ( Table 2 ) 4 5 7 8 9 . Therefore, susceptibility to HBV infection may be different among patients with varying severity of psoriasis.…”

“…Some previous studies have implied that patients with psoriasis have higher prevalence of HBV infection than the general population. For example, Guadagnino et al 4 showed higher risk of HBV infection in patients with chronic psoriasis or eczema in Naples, Italy (9.8% vs. 4.3%). Prevalence of HBV was 4% to 18% in the general Italian population, indicating an HBV-rich environment.…”
