Risk of iatrogenic damage to the sciatic nerve in dairy cattle

Abstract: Sciatic nerve damage in cattle could lead to pain, paralysis and lameness, creating welfare and productivity issues. Damage following intramuscular injection is highlighted in some clinical texts although there is no indication of prevalence. This cross-sectional study investigated the anatomical size and position of the sciatic nerve in four dairy cattle type cadavers. To evaluate the risk of iatrogenic damage, 54 participants placed needles in the dorsal gluteal region of two cadavers each, as per their rout… Show more

“…The sciatic nerve runs through the hindlimb, the largest nerve in the body 32 . Vaccinating the wrong location in dairy cow cadavers strayed sufficiently close to the sciatic nerve to risk damage, which, in live animals, would cause pain, nerve function compromise and limb paralysis 18 . What is not clear is whether individuals would stray close to these structures in sheep, as there is no comparative study.…”

In human patients with sciatic nerve damage to the gluteal region, the most common aetiology was IM injection, which presented as pain.…”

“…In dairy systems, injections are often performed in the milking parlour and are given in the gluteal region but caution should be taken when injecting in this site to avoid damaging the sciatic nerve. Where safety permits and where no injection site is specified, the neck region is always preferable (Kirkwood and others 2018) and appropriate handling systems such as races and feed barriers with self‐locking head yokes can help to facilitate this.…”
