Risk of Parkinson Disease Among Adults With vs Without Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Abstract: IMPORTANCEPosttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in elderly men may be associated with increased risk of Parkinson disease (PD); thus, this group of patients needs to be monitored closely for timely, customized treatment. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the risk of PD in patients with PTSD compared with patients without PTSD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This population-based, retrospective, cohort study used data from Maccabi Health Care Services (MHS), the second largest health plan in Israel, spanning from 2000 to… Show more

“…These constructs are illustrated in Figure 2 with a DAG of the putative causal effect of PTSD on PD. The DAG is based on previous research on PTSD and PD (Barer et al, 2022;Breslau, 1998;Günak et al, 2020;He et al, 2020;Maher et al, 2021;Miller & Sadeh, 2014;Simon et al, 2020).…”

“…Understanding the correlations between motor and non-motor symptoms in PD is crucial for effective management of the condition [ 13 ]. Recent research has shed light on the potential correlations between adjustment disorder (AD) and the onset and exacerbation of Parkinsonian symptoms [ 14 , 15 ]. AD is one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders and is generally conceptualized to be mild and short-lived.…”

“…These findings come on the heels of recent results from the Fox Insight Study showing that men with prior RHI from American football were at 1.6 times greater odds of having parkinsonism or a Parkinson disease diagnosis compared to men who had played other, noncontact organized sports, even among a sample already enriched for a history of parkinsonism and not selected for known or suspected prior RHI. 11 The Adams et al results shed light on the potential neuropathological underpinnings of the increased risk for parkinsonism in individuals with prior RHI.…”
