Risk of synchronous endometrial disorders in women with endometrioid borderline tumors of the ovary

Abstract: BackgroundSynchronous endometrial disorders have been poorly studied in women with endometrioid borderline ovarian tumors (EBOT). The aims of this study were to investigate the risk of endometrial disorders among women with EBOT and associated factors, as well as their oncological and fertility outcomes.ResultsThis retrospective study included 33 women with EBOT. Their mean age was 41.9 years, and endometria were evaluated in 25 of these patients. The prevalence of synchronous endometrial disorders was 52.0% (… Show more

“… 29 Another paper by Jia et al reported on 29 patients with eBOTs, half of them undergoing conservative surgery, followed up for a median of 54 months, experiencing a recurrence rate of 10.3% (3 patients). 27 Of these 3 patients with recurrences, all 3 were initially treated conservatively. 27 Finally, Yüksel et al described no recurrences in their study comprising 9 eBOTs in which 2 had undergone conservative surgery, over a follow-up period of 80–120 months.…”

“…2 ), resulting in their need to compromise the uterus and their fertility potential. Previous studies have demonstrated that 20–50% of EBOT patients have synchronous endometrial disorders, and a literature review has shown that among 111 EBOT patients with endometrial evaluations, 41.4% developed synchronous endometrial disorders [ 14 ]. Additionally, coexisting endometriosis was found in 40% ( n = 8/20) of the study patients and would also sacrifice their fecundity.…”

“…However, data on the safety of fertility preservation in endometrioid BOTs (EBOTs) are lacking, given its low incidence [ 12 14 ]. Previous studies on EBOTs have focused mainly on their pathological descriptions [ 13 , 15 17 ] and included only brief descriptions of the clinical features, management and follow-up of these patients [ 12 , 13 , 15 ].…”

“…In fact presence of abnormal vascular bleeding in setting of endometrioid ovarian cancer suggests coexistent endometrial pathology as was the case in our patient. In one study [7], 10/11 (90.9%) of women with abnormal vaginal bleeding in setting of endometrioid ovarian tumor had coexistent pathology which is much higher than that of general population (1.3% of premenopausal [8] and 17.1% of menopausal women [9] with abnormal vaginal bleeding harbor endometrial cancer or atypical hyperplasia). In fact women with abnormal vaginal bleeding may be detected and treated as they seek medical help earlier.…”
