Risk-scoring system for predicting mucositis in patients of head and neck cancer receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy [rssm-hn]

Abstract: The current tool is fairly accurate in predicting development of mucositis in head and neck cancer patients on chemoradiotherapy. This will further help clinicians to adopt preventive strategies as well as better counseling.

“…Oral mucositis occurs in 15–40% of patients receiving standard chemotherapy, and 100% of patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer develop oral mucositis of varying degrees [11, 12]. The mechanism by which mucositis occurs is based on the fact that the oral mucosa has a high level of mitotic activity and high cell turnover.…”

“…According to Suresh et al, 3 leukocyte levels below 3,000/μL increase the risk of oral mucositis occurrence, which is further increased in combination with factors such as poor oral hygiene and alcohol and tobacco consumption. In the present study, we did not observe a pattern of mucositis occurrence in patients undergoing HSCT because the degree of mucositis severity was not associated with the counting of leukocytes.…”

“…The term implies that cells will return to increase with time. 3 Studies have shown that the occurrence of clinical mucositis occurs inversely to bone marrow function, being higher during the nadir of neutropenia and healing, culminating with the recovery of granulocytes. 3,4 The aim of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of mucositis and oral candidiasis in patients who underwent Hematopoietic Stem Cell transplantation in the Hospital Erasto Gaertner (HEG, Curitiba, Brazil), and to compare that occurrence with the chemotherapeutic nadir of these patients.…”

“…Paragangliomas can arise anywhere in the sympathetic and parasympathetic chain of ganglia with the most common sites in the sympathetic nervous system being para-aortic. Extra-adrenal paragangliomas are also found in the head and neck region (glomus jugulare and carotid body tumors), ampulla of Vater, jejunum, pylorus of stomach, and, rarely, cauda equina [ 2 ], where they may account for up to 3.8% of all tumors in that region [ 3 ]. In the cauda equina region, this tumor presents as an intradural extramedullary mass.…”
