“…Furthermore, recent reports suggest that risperidone is useful for treating refractory depression (Goto et al, 2005;Papakostas et al, 2007). Rapaport et al (2006) investigated the longterm efficacy of risperidone augmentation of SSRI treatment for resistant depression.…”

“…These results indicate that one of the mechanisms responsible for the risperidone augmentation of refractory depression is associated with its suppression of the dopaminergic system 12 . In addition, we have reported that risperidone has little effect on paroxetine metabolism 12 . Thus, it seems unlikely in the present case that adding risperidone to paroxetine increased plasma paroxetine levels and that this was responsible for the observed clinical improvement.…”

“…One possibility is that paroxetine was effective in treating the depressive symptoms and risperidone was effective in treating the musical hallucinations; another possibility is that the combination of risperidone and paroxetine was effective in treating the core depressive symptoms and that the musical hallucination improved as a result of the relief of the depressive state. Recently, we have reported that risperidone augmentation of treatment with antidepressant drugs or mood stabilizers is effective for non‐vascular psychotic depression with or without hallucinations, 12 and we have also demonstrated that risperidone combined with antidepressant drugs or mood stabilizers significantly decreases plasma levels of homovanillic acid (HVA), a major metabolite of dopamine. These results indicate that one of the mechanisms responsible for the risperidone augmentation of refractory depression is associated with its suppression of the dopaminergic system 12 .…”

“…Retrospective chart reviews [50,51] and case reports [52] and a small open-label study [53] suggest an effectiveness for risperidone in treating MDDp. Effectiveness for quetiapine has been reported in case reports [54,55] a retrospective chart review [56] as well as a recent open-label study [57].…”
