RNA-seq of eight different poplar clones reveals conserved up-regulation of gene expression in response to insect herbivory

Abstract: Background: Herbivorous insects can have a profound impact on plant growth performance. In some years, canopy damage in poplar plantations exceeds 50% of the total leaf surface, thereby possibly compromising carbon fixation and biomass yield. To assess the transcriptional response of elite poplar clones to insect feeding and to test whether this response varies between different genotypes, we performed an RNA-sequencing experiment. We deeply sequenced the transcriptomes of eight elite clones belonging to three… Show more

“…Overall, the plant genotypes differed by the number, fold change and the function of the transcripts differentially expressed in response to the pathogen although the effect of time point on gene expressions could not be ruled out. High variation in gene expression patterns among plant genotypes has also been discovered in other studies ( Burghardt et al, 2017 ; Muller et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Carotenoid biosynthesis was closely bound up with light capture, photoprotection, and stabilization of the photosynthetic apparatus and involved in many stress responses [ 39 – 41 ]. Nephrolepis biserrata was infested by the scale insect Coccus hesperidum significantly decreased carotenoid accumulation [ 42 ]. In poplars, the carotenoid biosynthesis genes were enriched, and down-regulation reduced the availability of essential nutrients and thus compromised herbivore performance [ 43 ].…”

“…The transcriptome of eight different poplar clones belonging to three different species was analysed in response to the attack of herbivory insects and allowed the identification of common herbivory-induced genes and signalling pathways, which represent potential regulators of poplar response to insects [ 104 ].…”
