Road Design on Low Bearing Capacity Soils

Abstract: Soil with weak bearing capacity, like peat and organic grounds, is widespread in Latvia. During the geotechnical investigation for road reconstruction projects, in many cases the discovered soils with low physical-mechanical properties are located below the existing road structure. It is a challenge for a road design engineer to find a way how to ensure road loadbearing capacity and prevent the occurrence of various deformations. Various methods and technologies for ground structure reinforcement and stabiliza… Show more

“…However, in engineering works, the condition of the ground can never be totally definite and may establish a number of significant potential risks for projects [10]. The bearing capacity, which is specified as the strength of soil in supporting the loads that are laid onto the ground, becomes one of the most essential evaluation factors.…”

“…The design of roads and roadbeds should take into account the principles of functioning of highways [3,4]. It is mandatory to conduct engineering and geological investigations of the planned road section, calculation and justification of technological solutions, strict compliance with technical standards of the road for further operation of the road in safe and comfortable conditions [5,6].…”

“…Organic soils should be improved so that they can be used for construction (Rahman et al, 2016). Many methods of soil improvement are known and used around the world (Duraisamy et al, 2007;Hartlen et al, 1996;Huat et al, 2014;Edil, 2003;Virsis et al, 2020). However, regardless of the method, knowledge of the physical and mechanical parameters of organic soil is required.…”
