Roads in the Southwestern Amazon, State of Acre, between 2007 and 2019

Abstract: Over the past 40 years, roads have been the main driver behind the State of Acre’s occupation and development. However, the expansion of roads, has often been associated with the advance of deforestation, habitat fragmentation, and social conflicts. There are no up-to-date data available on the current extent of Acre’s road network nor its environmental and socioenvironmental impacts. In this study, we updated the State of Acre’s road network map for the period 2007 to 2019 through the visual interpretation of… Show more

“…Similar results have been documented by other authors (Devisscher et al, 2016;Kim et al, 2019). Based on the visual assessment of the active fire occurrence, we found additional evidence that our models were able to simulate the spatial patterns distribution of fire-prone areas in most of the years, which were concentrated near human settlements and along the major roads (Baraloto et al, 2015;Nascimento et al, 2021).…”

“…The execution of this infrastructure project poses a great challenge to the central objective of the SDNP. Multiple studies have shown increased anthropogenic pressures after opening roads in or near CUs (Yanai et al 2012, Vilela et al 2020, Nascimento et al 2021. Walker et al (2019) and Lovejoy and Nobre (2018) have shown that deforestation associated with such infrastructure could push the Amazon rainforest beyond a 'tipping point', causing its collapse in the southern and south-western regions.…”
