Robot-assisted distal gastrectomy with lymph node dissection for gastric cancer in a patient with situs inversus partialis: a case report with video file

Abstract: BackgroundSitus inversus is a rare congenital condition that is currently classified into two types: complete situs inversus (situs inversus totalis, SIT) and partial situs inversus (situs inversus partialis, SIP). In SIP patients, some organs are inverted and others are in their expected position, and individual patient variation in organ position increases surgical difficulty. Several surgeons have performed laparoscopic or robotic surgeries in situs inversus patients, but almost all were SIT patients. We re… Show more

“…For example, although lymph node dissection is not required for surgical treatment of GISTs[ 64 ], some SMTs ( e.g ., carcinoid or submucosal carcinoma and submucosal adenocarcinoma) require lymph node dissection during surgery[ 65 ]. In our institution, patients diagnosed with EGC are treated by robot-assisted gastrectomy with lymph node dissection[ 66 ].…”

“…Robotic gastrectomy has been introduced and is rapidly advancing in practice to overcome the range-ofmotion limitation in laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Recent reports have demonstrated the technical advantages of robotic gastrectomy in patients with SIT [19,20]. First, it is not necessary to change the position of surgeons during operation.…”

“…Only a few hospitals in mainland China have applied da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system in use. Moreover, current literatures regarding the role of surgical robot are merely limited to novel technique [1316] and case reports [17, 18]. The potential of da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system in this field remains far from being fully understood.…”
