Robot-Enhanced Language Learning for Children in Norwegian Day-Care Centers

Abstract: In a case study, we transformed the existing learning program Language Shower, which is used in some Norwegian day-care centers in the Grorud district of Oslo municipality, into a digital solution using an app for smartphones or tablets with the option for further enhancement of the presentation by a NAO robot. The solution was tested in several iterations and multiple day-care centers over several weeks. Measurements of the children’s progress across learning sessions indicated a positive impact of the progra… Show more

“…Sixteen of the 83 studies (partly) targeted a migrant population (Kim et al, 2014;Gordon et al, 2016;Rosenthalvon der Pütten et al, 2016;Kory Westlund et al, 2017;Lopes et al, 2017;Hemminki and Erkinheimo-Kyllönen, 2017;Goossens et al, 2019;Park et al, 2019;Engwall and Lopes, 2020;Kouri et al, 2020;Schulz et al, 2020;Engwall et al, 2021;Halbach et al, 2021;Leeuwestein et al, 2021;Cumbal, 2022; A robot mostly speaking L2, but also translating target words to L1 Konijn et al, 2022). A striking result is that only one of these studies used students' L1 to support learning of the L2 (Leeuwestein et al, 2021).…”

“…Te potential applications of android robots are enormous, especially in an aging population in developed countries. Android robots can be used to communicate the treatment of psychological diseases such as autism spectrum disorders studied by Kumazaki et al [121,122], or for teaching published by Halbach et al [9], in medical applications [123], and so on. Te efectiveness of the android robot is clearly shown in the study [121], and the pathological indicators have been reduced due to training courses with the android robot.…”

“…In addition, they can also help people study human behaviors and gestures that people are always attracted to because they are always curious about themselves. For example, studies on human behavioral manifestations were carried out by Kostavelis et al [7], in medicine, especially in treating psychological diseases [8], or for educational purposes [9]. In addition, humanoid robots are also designed to serve entertainment needs with diferent sizes and diferent numbers of DoF depending on applications.…”

“…Przykładowo w sferze wychowania obecność robotów w szkole wymusi stworzenie algorytmów minimalizujących przemoc dzieci wobec maszyn (Yamada et al 2020) . Roboty, obecnie naśladujące pracę nauczycieli (Halbach et al 2021), z czasem staną się wzorem dla osób chcących nauczać. Wówczas będziemy musieli zmierzyć się z zagadnieniem adekwatnego do wyzwań pracy pedagogicznej opisu ludzkiej niezdarności.…”
