Robotic‐assisted laparoscopic primary repair of acute iatrogenic colonic perforation: case report

Abstract: In the presented case, robotic primary colorrhaphy was demonstrated to be a safe and feasible alternative for the management of acute colonoscopic perforation and may warrant consideration in the emergency setting.

“…Robot-assisted surgical management for elective operations is a state-of-the-art practice, but the data on its use in the emergent operative space is minimal [ 14 ]. Per our search, the literature for robot-assisted repair of colonic perforation includes one case report of successful robotic primary colon repair using the da Vinci robot (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, California, United States) [ 15 ]. This case was undertaken using robotic technology to surpass the constraints of the laparoscopic approach, thereby offering enhanced visualization and precise maneuvers tailored to the unique requirements of the patient [ 15 ].…”

“…Experience with minimally invasive repair is relatively small but growing, with several small series (<20 patients each) reporting good results with laparoscopic repair [58e62], including isolated case reports of robotic repair [63]. Regardless of the approach, however the operative principles and procedures are relatively constant: treatment typically consists of primary repair, resection with anastomosis, or resection with colostomy.…”
