Robotic Dreams: A Computational Justification for the Post-Hoc Processing of Episodic Memories

Abstract: As part of the development of the Symbolic and Sub-symbolic Robotics Intelligence Control System (SS-RICS), we have implemented a memory store to allow a robot to retain knowledge from previous experiences. As part of the development of the event memory store justi¯cation for an o®-line, unconscious, cueing process was tested. Three strategies for the recognition of previous events were compared. The¯rst strategy stored all memories and searched all of the memories for a match to the current event. The second … Show more

“…The goal of these experiments was to understand the influences on estimation of item numerosity within visual search, where estimation is not the primary task..These studies were conducted in addition to four support studies, (Cassenti, Kelley, & Ghirardelli, 2010) as part of a general research program to study human attention and to develop computational models of memory mechanisms for robotics applications (Kelley, 2006(Kelley, , 2014. We assessed numerosity of unattended items as a dependent variable to gain insight into the nature of memory encoding during visual search tasks, where the goal of the task was unrelated to the number of items.…”

“…Therefore, the place cell population will present a single peak pattern, which maps the current position of the rat. We use the place cell mathematical model proposed by Oâ Ȃ ŹKeefe et al [24] to calculate the cell firing rate at each position, and its mathematical expression is shown in equation ( 3):…”

“…At present, there is no consensus on the way an EpLTM should be implemented for service robots, but many approaches can be found [9,10,11,12,19,20,22]. As the RoboCups goal is to boost research, we propose to evaluate only the core requirements an EpLTM must fulfill, avoiding to force an specific implementation on the teams.…”
